A vegetarian does not eat dead animals. Fish are animals. Hence, fish is not 'vegetarian' food. It's not really open to interpretation... The word means what the word means. I do not intend to criticize people who eat fish. I just would really like to know why the insistence on using the word? It certainly causes a lot of problems for vegetarians (and fish!). What's the benefit to a fish-eater of calling him- or herself a vegetarian? Thanks!
Like you said, vegetarians don't eat animals, so we don't eat fish. Many religions around the world have non-meat fasts that allow them to eat fish. I think this is the reason people get confused. I just tell them that they are a Pescetarian and not a vegetarian.
Pescetarian Life
Candace you idiot - chicken is WHITE meat and so is fish. It's flesh of a living creature & not a vegetarian food.
THANK YOU!!! I TOTALLY agree 100%. I am a new vegetarian. Turned one June 2008. I DO NOT eat anything that use to be alive. A vegetarian's diet does not consist of meat, poultry or fish. There are different levels of vegetarianism but I don't agree with them. I am NOT a vegan. I do drink cow's milk, eat other dairy products and eggs. My brother in law and cousin in law both claim to be vegetarians BUT both eat fish occasionally. I told my husband that neither are vegetarians at all. We don't call a duck a dog, so people who eat any type of once living animal (seafood included) should not refer to themselves as vegetarians. There are Vegetarians and Vegans. The end.
If a vegetarian is that concerned with getting their omega fats or whatever, they can take a supplement.
I am on the same page as you. I don't think you are being critical at all. You are simply stating the facts.
Vegetarians who eat fish are pescetarians. This is word often confuses people so its easier to just say they're vegetarian. I think we vegetarians who understand fish to be animals should just let them be. Pescetarians are still saving animals with their dietary choices. You wouldn't want vegans to look down on you for causing problems for dairy cows and chickens, would you? Vegetarians, vegans, pescetarians and what have you, are all making a difference in animals' lives.
I can't comment on "why" they call themselves vegetarians, you'd have to ask them individually because Im sure there are lots of reasons,
Over the years I've heard plenty of "reasons" but i would categorise them as "lame excuses" rather than reasons.
There really is no need to mis-interprete the defintion of a vegetarian, its a simple, clear defintion and has been that way since 1847
I'd like to see our fishy friends actually adress this with the various vegetarian groups around the world though.
surely, if they are "right" they won't mind doing that ?
Not a chance.
See my profile to links for what all the large groups think about this fishy business
We should all be accepting and tolarant because some people just genuinely don't know. But when they do find out, i rarely ( if ever ) have seen any fish eater say "sorry, i was wrong, i'll stop calling myself veggie now "
You appear to be at the "I've given up being tolorated so now will show my frustration". I've been there for 29 years !!!! Welcome to my world.
Only a vegetarian would understand why this is an issue.
Our fishy friends can eat all the fisvegetarian who eat fishh in the world, thats not the issue here. The issue here is all the confusion they create for 60 million vegetarians.
There is no such thing as a pesco, semi-,demi,flexi, whatever - vegetarian.
The word vegetarian has an absolute definition and it makes no sense to use a prefix to change it.
We don't do it to other words, why vegetarian ?
Ever heard of a semi-dead animal, or someone who is semi-black, or semi-catholic ??? Makes no sense
If we are to have pesco-vegetarians then surely we should also have bovine -vegetarians who are "vegetarians who eat beef" Anyone care to justify that stance ? No, thought not.
I cannot really justify why vegetarians would eat fish, because like you say, fish are animals and vegetarians are against eating animals. I think it is stupid for someone to eat fish and then say they are vegetarian.
All I can say is that my sister is a vegetarian, and up until a few years ago, she was happy to eat chicken (she never liked fish, but probably wouldve eaten that, too, if she wanted to). She said "vegetarians eat white meat, not red. But some dont eat any meat". hmm, right-o. I don't agree with her beliefs, but I think this goes back to religious beliefs--people were told not to eat red meat on Good Friday because red meat is a symbol of Jesus' body, so some people took it a step further and said "no red meat EVER!"
But as you know, Jesus told the story about the loaves and fish, so some people decided that it was okay to have WHITE meat because it has nothing to do with 'the body of Christ' and is not the colour of blood. Something like that, anyway.
It's all very weird, I know, but that's just what some people believe. Hope this helps a bit! :)
It's also a cultural thing. I have a Scottish friend and an italian friend who both consider it vegetarian to still eat seafood. I even remember doing a fish dance to the italian trying to explain that it moves and is therefore an animal. Maybe it's Europeans in general, I dont know.
Fish are vegetables.
Well, no they're not but let's pretend they are!!!1
Actually fish can be beneficial to some people. It helps with like joints or something. I personally wouldn't eat it, but fish is really the only animal I can think of that could be good for someone.
They obviously think it's cool to be called a Vegetarian. Plus they are stupid. Fish is an animal. You are NOT a Vegetarian if you eat fish. They have not been educated obviously.
Add definition: eater of fruits and grains and nuts; someone who eats no meat or fish or (often) any animal products
Another definition: Vegetarianism is the practice of a diet that excludes all meat, including poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, and slaughter by-products. ...
Yet another: vegetarianism - a diet excluding all meat and fish.
And another: vegetarian
Noun
a person who does not eat meat or fish
Adjective
excluding meat and fish:
Are we getting the point here?
For those saying it's just easier to call oneself a pescatarian rather than a vegetarian, let's count the syllables. pes/ca/ta/ri/an....5 ....veg/e/ta/ri/an 5. depending on how you pronounce the word I believe it to be of equal stature to say the RIGHT word. How hard is it to say, I don't eat any meat with the exception of fish, or either I don't eat meat at all including fish. So this is not a valid excuse.
Some people just enjoy the social politics of their vegetarian who eat fishdietary restriction and there for in some way feel socially superior by labelling themselves vegetarian even when they are not.
I eat fish and chicken. I am not a vegetarian, I am a flexitarian or semi-vegitarian. It's a way of letting people know you won't eat red meat.
i don't know, probably because it isn't considered a meat by most people (i.e. you can't buy it in a butcher's shop) my mom is the same way, so i'll ask her
Well technically they are pescatarians..ooh lala. i was, but i guess they tend to say vegetarian because people will know what they're talking about without always having to explain themselves.
their are fruitarians, ovo/lacto vegetarians, vegans and yes there are people like myself who like meat such as fish every once in awhile
cos they are trying to pretend they are and are thus hypocrites.. they correctly should refer to themselves as pescetarians
Because calling yourself a pescatarian is too complicated and it mostly comes up when someone is offered red meat or chicken.
Conversation:
You want a hot dog?
Nope, I'm a pescatarian.
What's that?
That's someone that doesn't any meat except fish.
Oh... What does fish have to do with Hot Dogs?
I'm a vegetarian, OK?
I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that call themselves vegan, but may eat honey, look at roses grown with corn meal, or eat crops grown with organic pesticides or with manure or even, God forbid, wear wool.
It's just not as black and white as you want it to be.
Lighten up Francis....
Because, to them, fish are vegetables.
because they r stupid. fish are animals
Because they are retarded. They are fake.
i know right...this girli know eats fish but not marshmellows lol
cuz they are retarded
As BLR said, there are levels of being a vegetarian.
vegans-nothing from animals
ovo-lacto vegetarians - consumes eggs, milk, dairy.
pesco vegetarians - consumes fish
there are even fruitarians - some eat fruits that are harvested
- some eat only fruits that fall from the tree or plant. they believe harvesting kills the fruit and they don't like to kill anything.
There are people that call themselves vegetarians even if they eat chicken... Their reasoning, "It's not a red meat."
I've found that it's mainly women that like calling themselves "vegetarians" even though they eat from the Animal Kingdom. Women like attention... being a "vegetarian" is a way of seeking attention and "saving the Earth" by not contributing to evil mean packing industry. A double bonus with one label!
A vegetarian does not eat meat and fish are not meat. Why, are you a vegetarian that does not eat fish? Who cares whether or not they eat fish.
because fish is not a type of meat or classed as it
vegitarians can eat things from an animal
its vegans that cant
fish are classed as fish not meat or poultry
so are acceptable to eat.
because fish is not red meat like beef, chicken, etc.
cuz fish are vegetables too
lol
Because he can. There is no vege police to prevent him from doing so.
