I've got the need for speed and a lot that I want to download off of the world wide web. What's the quickest web downloads accelerator I can get for free? I'd also like a pause feature, so I can stop and continue easily if I have other things to do. Any suggestions?
None of them really work.
I downloaded a download acceleator from Windows, & it did not speed up a thing. All it did was download the program real quick into its own download center, from where you have to retrieve it & then go through the same old set up wizard thing you always did before. I found that trying 2 or 3 different accelerators, they just made the initial start of the download , like really fast, thedownload accelerator freewaren back to the set up wizard thing. The only accelerator I like is the Google web accelerator, which speeds up going from site to site & page to page within a site, and in the two weeks I have had it, I have saved 1.8 hours of time to what it would have been without it. Those download ones are pains in the --------------- !
I prefer to refer to them as download managers not accelerators. In almost all cases they do not speed up downloads. Increases of 400% or 600% is pure BS.
I assume you are using dial up to need a pause feature.
For dial up I liked MetaProducts Download Express (free version). It should meet all your needs. It does not install any spyware. At the bottom of the Medownload accelerator freewaretaProducts page is the add-in for Firefox.

If you are using dial up it is probably costing you $10 per month, is slow, and is tying up your phone line.
For $5 per month more you can get DSL.
